Kansas Communicator of the Year
The Kansas Communicator of the Year award recognizes an outstanding individual in the field of public communications. This award honors individuals who have demonstrated exceptional skill, creativity, and dedication in their work, and who have had a positive impact on the communities they serve.
Nominations open July 1st, 2026.
How to Submit Nomination
Eligibility & Process
- Eligible candidates for this award include communication professionals working in any public information sector or industry.
- Nominations for the Kansas Communicator of the Year award may be submitted by any individual or organization, and self-nominations are also welcome.
- The nomination process will include a written statement outlining the nominee's qualifications for the award, as well as any relevant supporting materials (such as samples of their work or letters of recommendation).
- The recipient of the Kansas Communicator of the Year award will be selected - by a panel of judges appointed by the KAPIO Board - based on the strength of their qualifications, their impact on their community, and their potential to inspire others in the field of communication.
- The award will be presented at a special ceremony on September 25th, during KAPIO's annual conference (however, the winner is not required to be a member of KAPIO).
Nomination Criteria
Along with the nomination form (10 points), a letter should be attached detailing the nominee’s accomplishments over the last 18 months.
(Maximum 1,000 words)
As part of the nomination letter, the following criteria should be addressed:
- The demonstration of exceptional leadership as it pertains to government communications and marketing. (10 points)
- Consistent use of communication strategies that demonstrate creativity and innovation in contributing to the success of the city/county/agency organization. (20 points)
- Understanding and utilization of the latest communications tools and devices in carrying out the mission of the organization. (20 points)
- Commitment to the highest ethical and professional standards. (10 points)
- Three specific examples of the nominee’s work over the past 18 months. (30 points)
